History : The northwest section of Luzon is known as the Ilocos region, composed of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur. The region is a distinctive area because of its dominant physical features. The land is bounded to the north by the Babuyan Channel and to the west by the Luzon Sea, the waters of which wash the coasts of Ilocos. Farther west beyond Luzon Sea is the South China Sea. The coastline is relatively smooth, with a few shallow bays. Some fifteen to twenty kilometers eastward from the shore is a chain of mountains reaching a height of around 2,000 meters. These mountains are known today as the Gran Cordillera Central mountain range, but were also called Caraballo Norte during the Spanish era. The mountain range parallels the coast for about 250 kilometers, from Pasaleng Bay to the Agno River basin in Pangasinan.
